Choosing K-Dramas by Screenwriter

Pick by the writer, not the cast — how to narrow your drama taste through the screenplay

Most people start with the cast when choosing a drama. But when you close a show two or three episodes in because "this isn't for me," the reason usually sits with the screenplay rather than the actors. When the incident lands, which episode the twist was placed in, how much of a character's information stays hidden. Direction and editing lay tone on top of that, but building the skeleton is mostly the writer's job.

The trouble is that information about writers is harder to find than information about actors. On a poster the name gets pushed down into small type, and organized filmographies are scarce. What follows are four criteria you can work with even from that thin material. The examples are limited to the two titles this site has verified down to the writing credits — KBS 2TV's The Completion of Marriage and Netflix's Donggung. That the sample is only two, stated up front.

Axis 1 — Original screenplay, or adaptation?

This is where things first split from the writer's point of view, and the viewing experience itself changes with it.

Adaptations move IP that already has readers — webtoons, web novels — onto the screen. Judged less likely to fail, the lineup has kept growing. For viewers, the fact that reading the source first tells you the ending is both an advantage and a drawback. Good if you want a stable narrative, bad if you want the shock of a twist.

Original screenplays are worked out from scratch with no source material. The verdict turns on how the writer designed the story rather than on adaptation craft, and when it works, "you can't predict the next episode" becomes the weapon itself. KBS 2TV's 2026 Saturday–Sunday miniseries The Completion of Marriage belongs here. Jeong Jae-ha wrote it alone, with no webtoon or web novel underneath. Even before it aired, "there's no source, so you can't know the plot in advance" was cited as a selling point.

One practical caution comes with it. With original works it's easy to confuse the title with other source content of a similar name and step on the ending early. When you search, don't type the title alone — put the broadcaster and the year in with it.

Axis 2 — Designing incidents, or designing a world?

Even within the same genre, the writer's weight falls in different places. The two titles below happen to be neat opposites.

Incident-designed — Jeong Jae-ha

What Jeong Jae-ha chose in The Completion of Marriage is a genre-switching structure. It starts from an everyday conflict: the collapsing marriage of two neurosurgeons. Kang Tae-ju (Namgoong Min), director of Uri Hamkke Hospital, and Ko Se-yun (Lee Seol), chair of its board — a couple on the brink, turned away from each other at home and at the hospital alike. Then, with the wife's disappearance and abduction as the pivot, the genre swings hard toward crime thriller. It's a structure that betrays at the midpoint the expectations it stacked up early.

Two more devices sit on top of that. One is the villain in disguise. The kidnapper Noh Man-hee (Kim Dae-myung) runs a computer academy on the surface, an ordinary man, and is in fact a criminal who approached them as a designated driver. It lays the unease of "anyone could be the perpetrator" across the whole drama. The other is foreshadowing tied to the title and a line of dialogue. "One of the two has to die for this marriage to be complete" is the motif behind the title, and it functions as a payoff device designed to be read again after the midpoint. Making the lead an authority in spinal-nerve microsurgery also works to make the background of the conflict concrete.

With a screenplay like this, which of the twelve episodes holds the twist is effectively everything. It suits people who enjoy the timing of events.

World-designed — Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won

Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, who wrote Netflix's Donggung, have a different grain. They're the pairing that built worlds in Bulgasal and The Guest, and in Donggung they lay a board where reality meets the world of spirits, setting Korean traditional ghost lore inside the closed space of the palace.

With this kind of screenplay, the pleasure of understanding the rules outweighs the twist of any single incident. In practice, Donggung runs better if, instead of trying to memorize every setting early on, you just hold on to "under what conditions does the phenomenon get stronger." Turned around, for anyone who finds keeping up with a mythology tiring, that becomes the barrier to entry.

Axis 3 — Can you predict from earlier work?

Once you know a writer's name, the next question is "what has this person written before?" And whether prediction is possible at all becomes an axis of taste in its own right.

For Jeong Jae-ha, the only credit confirmable in published Korean media and wiki sources is The Completion of Marriage. No verifiable material turned up for earlier broadcast work or a screenwriting-contest win, so none of it went into the filmography on the writer's page either. So the accurate phrasing isn't "has no earlier work" but "cannot be confirmed." Whether it's absent because they're a newcomer, or because a stint as an assistant writer left no record, is unknown.

Axis 4 — The screenplay combined with direction and episode count

A screenplay isn't completed alone. The same script takes a different tone depending on who directs, so it's worth looking at the director's name beside the writer's.

The Completion of Marriage is a 12-episode KBS 2TV Saturday–Sunday miniseries, written by Jeong Jae-ha, directed by Kim Jung-hyun and Kim Min-tae, and produced by Red Nine Pictures and KBS Media. It premiered on July 4, 2026, airs Saturdays and Sundays at 9:20 p.m., and streams afterward on Wavve and Disney+. Donggung has a screenplay by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won with direction by Choi Jung-kyu, whose earlier work includes The Devil Judge and Red Moon, Blue Sun. It's a combination where occult and mystery histories overlap on both the writing and the directing side. It's an eight-episode Netflix series released on July 17, 2026.

Episode count is worth reading alongside. Eight to twelve episodes commonly go down in a single week; sixteen or more usually get split across two or three sittings. Donggung, at eight, has the density for a one-day weekend binge, while The Completion of Marriage, at twelve, carries its pace on two episodes each weekend. Episode count itself is usually set by scheduling and production circumstances rather than by the writer, but once it's fixed, where the twist goes is decided inside it. So episode count can be read as part of the screenplay information too.

One line per taste

When you're checking a writer's information

There's less material on writers than on actors, so wrong information slips in easily. While putting together the information on Jeong Jae-ha, the name of an actor from a different, identically titled work turned up mixed into the text of an article; it couldn't be cross-checked, so that information was thrown out whole.

Searching by name alone mixes in namesakes and identically titled works, so writer's name + broadcaster + year together is the safer approach. A wiki page doesn't mean the record has been confirmed either. Jeong Jae-ha's Korean Wikipedia entry is a stub with almost nothing in it, so the fact that the page exists was no evidence in itself. Finally, give the label "debut work" one round of suspicion. Often it's only the first credit that can be confirmed.
