Gangneung Danoje Festival

Gangneung Danoje 2026 — UNESCO's 1,000-Year Festival, The One Thing Foreigners Must See in Korea in June

Gangneung in June is a city where 1,000 years of history pour onto the streets for a week. A UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (inscribed in 2005), it is the largest and best-preserved among Korea's four major Danoje festivals. If a foreign traveler were to see Korean traditional culture just once, Gangneung Danoje is the answer. The main event for 2026 begins around June 8th, with the climax around the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (June 19th in the solar calendar).

If K-Pop, K-Drama, and fried chicken represent Korea's "now," Gangneung Danoje truly showcases Korea "from 1,000 years ago until today."

3 Reasons Why Gangneung Danoje is Special

1. A Korean Festival Guaranteed by UNESCO

Inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005. The first Korean festival to receive this designation. Preserved rituals, music, and plays all retain their 1,000-year-old forms.

2. Almost the Only Chance to See a True Korean Gut (Shamanic Ritual)

Dano Gut for 7 consecutive days — a Korean traditional ritual where shamans become messengers between gods and humans. This gut, usually difficult for tourists to access, is open to everyone for free.

3. A Street Carnival with a 1,000-Year History

The area around Namdaecheon Stream in Gangneung + the entire Danojang transforms into a giant festival stage. 2 million visitors (as of 2024).

June Gangneung + Danoje = A Golden Combination for Korean Travel

During Danoje week, Gangneung combines a perfect trifecta: the pristine East Sea + a 1,000-year-old festival + refreshing early summer. The festival is held annually for about a week around the 5th day of the 5th lunar month (around June in the solar calendar) — in 2026, it was held from June 8th to 22nd. As the monsoon season begins soon after the festival, if you aim for the next Danoje, the festival week right before the monsoon is the golden window for traveling to Gangneung. Check the official website's announcement each spring for the exact schedule.

If You Missed Danoje

After Danoje, July and August bring monsoon season + heatwaves. Outdoor festivals take a temporary break. The Boryeong Mud Festival in August and the Andong Maskdance Festival in October are the next major Korean festivals. In between, mountain trekking in Gangwon-do or a refreshing cafe tour in Jeju are alternatives.
