Liberation Day Holiday Trip — The Last Three Days of Summer

Liberation Day in 2026 is Saturday, August 15th. Although it falls on a Saturday, Monday, August 17th, will be observed as a substitute holiday, making it a three-day weekend (Sat, Sun, Mon). This is because substitute holidays apply to national holidays even when they fall on a Saturday. This is contrary to Chuseok in the same year, which falls on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and thus does not receive a substitute holiday.

It is also the last long weekend of summer. As August draws to a close, beach operations end, and valley water play facilities also gradually close. These three days are effectively the end of summer outings.

Where Reservations Are (and Aren't) Possible Now

With the long weekend just around the corner, options are already limited. Realistically, here's the situation.

Based on popular tourist destinations, most accommodations are fully booked or remaining room rates have significantly increased. However, cancellations often become available in the three days just before the holiday, so if you're set on a specific area, it's worth checking a couple of times a day.

Day trips are still an option. If you're planning at this point, not relying on overnight stays will significantly reduce stress. If round-trip travel is within 3-4 hours, you could even spend two of the three days at different locations.

For facilities requiring admission tickets, online advance reservations are often still available. This is when on-site ticket lines are longest, so simply checking for advance reservation availability can save you an hour.

Choosing by Travel Distance

Within 1 hour by car — This option prioritizes spending more time at the destination than traveling. You can leave late and return in the evening. Around 2 hours by car — This range uses up an entire day. From the Seoul metropolitan area, this includes Gangwon Yeongseo, northern Chungcheong, and the southern reaches of Gyeonggi Province. If you depart around 7 AM, you can largely avoid traffic congestion.

More than that — This is a decision to dedicate one of the three days entirely to travel. Since northbound traffic will be heavy on the afternoon of Monday, the 17th (the last day of the holiday), it's better to plan your return for Sunday.

Water Play in Mid-August Has Different Conditions

The water conditions in mid-August are not the same as in peak summer.

The water temperature in valleys starts to drop. While it's still cool in the midday, after 4 PM, body heat is lost more quickly. If you're with young children, it's safer to concentrate water play time from morning to early afternoon.

Most beaches officially close their operations in late August. Since lifeguard deployment and shower room operations conclude according to this schedule, visiting after the operating period means completely different conditions. For many places, this long weekend will be the last weekend you can visit with lifeguards on duty.

It is also a period with frequent typhoon impacts. The habit of checking the weather forecast one more time the day before departure is particularly valuable during this period.

Places Worth Visiting for Liberation Day

If you want to give meaning to the date, there are separate options. Modern and contemporary history spaces like Seodaemun Prison History Hall, the Independence Hall of Korea, and the Ahn Jung-geun Memorial Hall often run special programs on Liberation Day itself. Free admission or commemorative events may also be held, but the content changes annually, so you should check the official announcements of each institution.

Places where walking and history overlap, such as Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, which includes both a fortress wall and a temporary palace, are also suitable for this long weekend. However, there are sections with little shade, so early morning or around sunset is better.

How to Arrange the Three Days

• Saturday, 15th — It's the most crowded. As it's the first day of the long weekend and a public holiday, travel volume will be at its peak. It's better not to go far.
• Sunday, 16th — Roads are most stable. If you're planning a long-distance day trip, this is the day.
• Monday, 17th — The morning is quiet, but northbound traffic gets congested from the afternoon. A plan to visit briefly in the morning and wrap up in the early afternoon is a good choice.

What to Prepare

For a hot long weekend, priority is more important than a mere list of items. The order of priority is: means to create shade, water, and a change of clothes. A parasol or a tarp can double your stay time. If you don't have a cooler, two frozen bottles of water can serve the purpose.
