Seoul — A Real Intro for a First-Time Visitor

For most foreign travelers, Seoul is the starting point of the Korea trip. A subway that runs nearly 24/7, restaurants open till dawn, mountains within 30 minutes of downtown, and 600-year-old palaces sitting next door to global tech offices. This page is a practical, one-page "what a first-time visitor should know."

What kind of city it is

Population 10 million, area about half of Tokyo's — but content density beats almost any city in the world. The Han River cuts through the middle, with 25 districts spread on both sides. For foreign travelers, 90% of the route falls inside the triangle of Jongno/Junggu (palaces, markets) ↔ Mapo/Yongsan (Hongdae, Itaewon) ↔ Gangnam (shopping, restaurants).

Neighborhoods — where to go

• 🏯 Jongno/Junggu (tradition & history) — Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, Gwangjang Market. Day-one course.
• 🎤 Hongdae/Hapjeong (young streets) — clubs, live-music cafés, street performances. Energetic from evening to dawn.
• 👗 Myeongdong/Namdaemun (shopping) — cosmetics and souvenirs. A foreign-tourist mecca; opinions divide.
• 🍣 Gangnam (trendy) — Garosu-gil, Apgujeong Rodeo, Cheongdam. The cafés-and-restaurants battlefield. Prices are higher.
• 🌮 Itaewon/Hannam (multinational) — high foreign-resident ratio. Wide range of foreign food, plenty of English-friendly spots.
• 📚 Seongsu/Yeonnam (today's hot zone) — converted factories and houses turned into café neighborhoods. Most viral SNS shots come from here.

Transport — one T-money card is all you need

• Incheon Airport → Seoul: AREX direct train 43 min (to Seoul Station), or local 60 min. Or limousine bus 1–1.5 hours.
• Gimpo Airport → Seoul: Subway Line 5 or Line 9.
• Around the city: subway covers almost everything. A T-money card (sold and rechargeable at any convenience store) works on subways, buses, and some taxis.
• Taxi: KakaoT app is the standard. English supported. Foreign visitors can also use International Taxi (orange livery).
• When direct airport-to-hotel makes sense: KAL Limousine or taxi. Recommended if you've got heavy bags.

Food — one meal per neighborhood

• Gwangjang Market — bindaetteok (mung-bean pancake), "mayak" gimbap, yukhoe (raw beef). Best for market atmosphere + Korean intro
• Myeongdong kalguksu & dumplings — Myeongdong Kyoja is the original (50 years on two simple menu items)
• Hongdae gopchang — Mapo Bonga, beef intestines (a strong food, opinions split)
• Itaewon lamb — the Islamic street has halal, Turkish, and Iranian restaurants. Friendly to vegetarian/halal travelers
• Gangnam hanwoo (Korean beef) — pricey but real Korean BBQ. About 50–100k won per person
• Late-night cures — kongnamul-gukbap, bukeo-guk, sundae-gukbap. 24-hour restaurants are common.

Wi-Fi · SIM · payment

• Buy a SIM/eSIM right at the airport: telecom counters on the arrivals floor — 7–30 day plans, 10–30k won.
• Public Wi-Fi: subway, cafés, tourist sites mostly free.
• Payment: Visa/Mastercard accepted almost everywhere. Markets and street stalls need cash or convenience-store ATMs.
• Currency exchange: private exchangers in Myeongdong have the best rates. ATMs marked GLOBAL work with foreign cards.

Safety & practical

• Korea is very safe. Late-night alleys are relatively safe.
• Emergency: 119 (fire/medic), 112 (police), 1330 (tourist interpreter — 24/7 English/Chinese/Japanese).
• Visa: most nationalities visa-free, but K-ETA pre-approval is required (k-eta.go.kr).
• Toilets: subway stations, department stores, convenience stores, cafés — free and clean.

Recommended itineraries

• 1 day — Gyeongbokgung (morning) → Gwangjang Market (lunch) → Bukchon/Insadong (afternoon) → Myeongdong (evening)
• 3 days — add Hongdae (day 2 evening), Han River (day 2), Gangnam (day 3)
• 5+ days — fit in Busan, Jeju, or Jeonju as well

Honest tips

• Myeongdong and Insadong are touristy. For local-feel spots, head to Gwangjang Market, Hongdae, or Seongsu.
• Last subway runs around midnight. Budget for taxis if you plan to stay out later.
• Cafés are everywhere with café-as-coworking-space culture — long sit-ins are normal.
• English level is higher in Gangnam, Itaewon, and tourist zones; limited elsewhere. Install Papago (translator) before you arrive.
• Korean BBQ is best value for 4+. Solo or duo? Pick spots with single-person menus.
