Namsan — A Mountain in the Middle of Seoul, with N Seoul Tower
Namsan looks like a mountain but isn't quite one. Technically it is — but it has a cable car, sits right in the middle of the city, and gives you a 360-degree view of Seoul from the top. Non-hikers can easily reach the summit, which is why Namsan is on almost every foreign traveler's Seoul itinerary.
What it is
A 262-meter hill in central Seoul. N Seoul Tower (Namsan Tower) sits at the top, and the whole hill is parkland (Namsan Park). Walking paths, stairs, cable car, shuttle bus — so many ways up that any choice works.
Four ways to the top
Pick based on fitness, time, and budget.
- 🚶 Stairs / walking trails (30–40 min on foot, free) — start from Myeongdong, Hoehyeon, or the Namsan northern loop road. The most recommended. Good exercise, great atmosphere. Sneakers fine.
- 🚌 Namsan loop bus (cheap) — leaves from Myeongdong, Chungmuro, or Seoul Station. T-money. Get off at the N Seoul Tower stop.
- 🚡 Cable car (easy, paid) — boarding station 10 min walk from Myeongdong toward Hoehyeon. About 15,000 won round trip; 3-minute ride. Expect 30 min – 1 hour in line.
- 🚖 Taxi — possible but not recommended (city traffic + short distance).
What you'll see from the top
The N Seoul Tower plaza combines observation deck + Love Locks fence + café + souvenir shop in one place. The outdoor deck is free. The indoor 360-degree observatory is paid.
- Observatory admission: about 21,000 won (adult). Worth it for a night view.
- N.Grill (revolving restaurant) and cafés are inside.
- Love Locks fence — couples leave locks here. A photo spot.
Getting there
- Stair trail — Subway Line 4 Myeongdong Station Exit 3 or Hoehyeon Station Exit 4 → 10–15 min walk to the trailhead
- Cable car station — 10-min walk from Myeongdong Station
- Namsan loop bus — transfer from Chungmuro or Seoul stations
Pair with nearby
- Myeongdong — right below Namsan. Meals, shopping, currency exchange.
- Namdaemun Market — near Hoehyeon Station. Market food.
- Itaewon — south side of Namsan (Hangangjin Station). International food.
- Namsangol Hanok Village — near Chungmuro Station. Free hanok visit.
The real highlight is the night view
N Seoul Tower's real value is at night. Go up about an hour before sunset for:
- The sunset (west, toward the Han River)
- The night cityscape (Seoul lights in every direction)
- The tower's lights (colors change through the night)
Recommended timing — 6–9 PM for the best photos.
Food — up top / down below
- At the top — cafés and restaurants exist but are pricey. Light snacks recommended.
- Below — Myeongdong (kalguksu, dumplings, BBQ), Namdaemun (market food). Eat before heading up.
Season by season
- 🌸 Spring (April) — Namsan cherry-blossom road. Blossom tunnels along the walking path.
- ☀️ Summer — cool forest paths in the city. Skip midday — go evening.
- 🍁 Autumn — foliage + city night view combo
- ❄️ Winter — snow-covered paths, N Tower lights. Cold enough that the cable car wins.
Honest tips
- Cable car queues are very long (especially weekends and night-view hours). It's common to spend more time queuing than the stair walk would take.
- The observatory ticket may feel expensive — the free outdoor plaza already has a great view.
- Love Locks require buying a lock (sold at the plaza).
- A famous date spot — couples everywhere. Solo travelers fine; the vibe is what it is.
- Almost mandatory for foreign visitors — a Seoul trip without one N Seoul Tower photo feels incomplete.
