Why You Really Need to Be Careful When Climbing Mount Halla
A beginner's conquest of Hallasan Peak!

Hallasan — Korea's Highest Peak You Can Do in a Day

Hallasan (1,947 m) is Korea's tallest mountain. Surprisingly, plenty of foreign travelers attempt it. The reasons are two: you can summit and return in a single day, and the volcanic crater lake at the top (Baengnokdam) is a landscape you can't see anywhere else in Korea. Carve a day out of your Jeju trip and it becomes a hike you remember for life.

What kind of mountain

A dormant volcano rising in the center of Jeju Island. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Natural Heritage site. The summit's Baengnokdam crater is a former lake (mostly grassland now). The whole mountain is a national park; it's more a long steady trek than technical climbing — no exposed rock ridges.

Courses — choose one of four

Two routes go to the summit, two do not.

  • 🔴 Seongpanak Course (to summit, 9.6 km round, ~8–10 hrs) — most common. Gentle but long and repetitive. Advance reservation required.
  • 🔴 Gwaneumsa Course (to summit, 8.7 km round, ~8–10 hrs) — steeper but with dramatic scenery. Advance reservation required.
  • 🟡 Yeongsil Course (no summit, 5.8 km round, ~4 hrs)the top pick for foreign travelers. Famous for crags and royal azaleas; great scenery without summiting.
  • 🟡 Eorimok Course (no summit, 6.8 km round, ~4–5 hrs) — up to Witseoreum. Similar to Yeongsil but with a broader ridge.

Honest recommendation: for foreign travelers, Yeongsil or Eorimok is the right call. The summit views are monotonous beyond the photo; Yeongsil itself shows Hallasan's real beauty.

Summit reservation — required

The two summit courses (Seongpanak, Gwaneumsa) have daily entry limits and require advance reservation via the official Hallasan site.

  • Site: visithalla.jeju.go.kr
  • Reservations open about a month in advance
  • Foreigners can book in English
  • ID check at entry

Yeongsil and Eorimok do not require reservations.

Getting to the trailhead

From downtown Jeju to a trailhead (Seongpanak / Gwaneumsa / Yeongsil / Eorimok) — by city bus or rental car.

  • Downtown Jeju → Seongpanak: bus 281, ~50 min
  • Downtown Jeju → Yeongsil entrance: bus 240 (1.5 km walk from the Yeongsil stop)
  • A rental car is much easier — practically required for the early start.

Food — before and after

  • Bring kimbap or a lunchbox — no restaurants inside the park. Stock up at a convenience store or kimbap shop on the way.
  • Black-pig BBQ after descending — downtown Jeju or Jungmun Black Pig Street.
  • Galchi stew — a Jeju specialty.
  • Cafés — the 1100 Highland rest area (near Yeongsil) is essentially a café on the mountain.

Season by season

  • 🌸 Spring (May–June)Witseoreum royal azalea blooms peak in late May to early June. Yeongsil and Eorimok are the real highlights.
  • ☀️ Summer — green forests, cool altitude. Frequent fog and rain.
  • 🍁 Autumn (October) — foliage and silver grass. The highest ratio of clear days.
  • ❄️ Winter (Jan–Feb)a snowy Hallasan is the pinnacle of Korean winter hiking. But the summit can fall below −15 °C — gear required.

Honest tips — read these

  • Without a clear day, you won't see Baengnokdam. Climbing 8–9 hours only to get fogged out is common.
  • High-altitude weather changes fast — downtown can be sunny while the summit is foggy and wet. Check the visithalla site before leaving.
  • 1.5 L of water + plenty of snacks. Shops are at the trailhead only.
  • Hiking boots required. Most injuries happen to people in sneakers.
  • Dawn starts are standard — the Seongpanak course has a cutoff time; 4–5 AM starts are the norm.
  • Phone power bank — comms are critical in emergencies.
  • For foreigners, Yeongsil delivers the best return for effort — you see the heart of the scenery and are back down in 4 hours.

Visitor info

  • Admission: free (national park)
  • Official: visithalla.jeju.go.kr (Korean/English/Chinese/Japanese)
  • Hours: cutoff times vary by course — check the site.

June Guide (June 2026)

From late May to early June, Hallasan seems like another planet, not Earth. The deep pink panorama of azalea clusters spreading over the dark red volcanic terrain is truly overwhelming. During this period, the area around the Witseoreum Shelter transforms into a 'heavenly flower garden' you'll never forget.

However, June is a time to remember the fickle weather. From late May, the monsoon front moves north, increasing the likelihood of rapid temperature changes and rain. In particular, since Memorial Day (6/6) in 2026 falls on a Friday, creating a 4-day long weekend, a thorough plan is essential as a large number of visitors are expected during this period.

Recommended Period and Courses The peak season for azaleas is between the last week of May and the second week of June. We recommend the Yeongsil Trail (1 hour 30 minutes one way) or the Eorimok Trail (2 hours one way) to best enjoy the Witseoreum azaleas. Please note that neither of these trails goes up to the Baengnokdam Crater Lake summit.

Practical Information

  • Transportation: Bus number 240, which connects Jeju City and Seogwipo City, stops at the entrance of each trail, making it easily accessible even for car-free travelers.
  • Reservations and Fees: There is no entrance fee, but all hikes require advance reservation through the 'Hallasan National Park Reservation System'. Parking is paid, and it's recommended to arrive early in the morning as lots tend to fill up quickly during long weekends.
  • Essentials: A waterproof windbreaker, hiking boots, and extra clothes are not optional, but essential. The weather at high altitudes is unpredictable.

Tips for Foreign Travelers Major trail signs are bilingual with English, so finding your way is not difficult. However, trail reservations are currently only available on the Korean website, so it's advisable to get help from a Korean friend or accommodation staff to complete your reservation before your visit.
