Boseong Travel Guide — There's More Than Just Tea Fields

Say "Boseong" and most people picture one thing: endless rows of green tea terraces. True — but Boseong is too good to visit just for a single photo. Hillside tea fields, a seaside green-tea spa, a village that holds a chapter of modern Korean literature, and a port famous for cockles — string them together and you have a full day (or an easy overnight) of "things to do in Boseong." This guide lays out the route and the food so first-timers can see it all at a glance.

What to See in Boseong

① Daehan Dawon (Boseong Green Tea Field) — Boseong's icon. The oldest tea plantation in Korea, with roughly 300,000 pyeong (about 1 km²) of terraces draped over the hillsides like contour lines. This is the sweeping green landscape you've seen in films and commercials. Walk the cedar-lined entrance path up to the observation point and budget 1–2 hours. (For the deep dive on the fields, restaurants, and foreigner tips, see the Boseong Green Tea Field guide.)

② Korea Tea Museum — Right by the fields, easy to pair. Exhibits walk you through the history of tea and how it's processed, with tea-tasting and tea-ceremony experiences — a good rainy-day or beat-the-heat option.

③ Yulpo Beach & Yulpo Seawater Green-Tea Spa — One of Boseong's "nine scenic views." A sandy beach backed by pine groves, a complete change of scene from the tea hills. Next door, the Yulpo spa combines a seawater bath and a green-tea bath — the perfect way to soak tired legs after walking the fields.

④ Taebaek Sanmaek Literature Museum (Beolgyo) — Beolgyo, in Boseong County, is the main stage of Jo Jung-rae's epic novel Taebaek Sanmaek. The museum and the literary walking trail let you step through the novel's real locations — a different flavor of travel from the fields and the sea.

⑤ Deungnyang Station Memory Street — A small Gyeongjeon-line station whose surroundings are dressed up as a retro old street. Worth a quick stop on the way to the fields if you're after nostalgic photos.

What to Eat in Boseong

Half of a Boseong trip is the food. Around the tea fields you'll find nok-don (pork raised on green tea) and green-tea set menus, and a green-tea ice cream at a field-side café is practically mandatory. Head down to Beolgyo and the mood changes completely — it's nationally famous for cham-kkomak (blood cockles) and cockle set meals. Looking for a "Boseong green tea field restaurant"? Aim for the set-menu houses near the fields, or the cockle alley in Beolgyo.

Getting There

  • Train: The Gyeongjeon-line Mugunghwa service runs from Gwangju Songjeong through Beolgyo–Joseong–Yedang–Deungnyang–Boseong Station. It's slow, but the window views are the point — and it links Beolgyo (literature, cockles) and Boseong (tea fields) on one line.
  • Bus: Intercity and rural buses connect Gwangju with Boseong and Yulpo, some extended to Yulpo. By public transit, transfer to a Yulpo-bound bus at Boseong-eup terminal.
  • Car: The fields, Yulpo, and Beolgyo are spread out, so a rental car is by far the easiest way to link them.

Suggested One-Day Route

Deungnyang Station (Memory Street) → Daehan Dawon (morning, best light on the fields) → Korea Tea Museum → lunch (green-tea set / nok-don) → Yulpo Seawater Green-Tea Spa (afternoon rest) → Taebaek Sanmaek Museum & Beolgyo cockle alley (evening). With an overnight, stay in Yulpo and take Beolgyo at a relaxed pace the next day.

When to Go

The green is deepest in late spring to early summer. The Daehyang Daechukje tea festival is held in Boseong around May, drawing the biggest crowds (check Boseong County tourism for exact dates and events). In winter, the Daehan Dawon area sometimes hosts a light festival — worth checking seasonal events before you go. The fields look best in the morning and late afternoon; midday in high summer offers little shade, so bring a hat and water.

Why Boseong

Boseong is called Korea's "tea capital," but the real draw is that you can pack four very different textures — tea fields (mountain), seawater green-tea spa (sea), literary trail (village), and cockles (port) — into a short trip. It turns a place known only as a photo spot into somewhere you walk, rest, eat, and read. First time? Follow the route above. Second time? Branch out to the field-side cafés or the back streets of Beolgyo.
