Korea in May — The Best Month of the Year to Travel
May is widely considered Korea's golden month for travel. Spring blossoms have faded into deep greenery, even midday isn't hot, and the rainy season is still ahead — so clear days are plentiful. Of all four seasons, it's the most reliable time to plan outdoor activities — almost the right answer for showing a foreign visitor Korea for the first time.
Why Korea in May is special
- The most comfortable climate — 15–23 °C on average. Not hot, not cold.
- The greenest month of the year — tea fields, riversides, and palace gardens are at their lushest.
- The last clear month before monsoon — little rain, relatively low fine-dust levels.
- The tail end of flower season — cherry blossoms are gone, but royal azaleas, ipanamu, and acacia bloom on ridges and streets.
- Smaller crowds than peak blossom season — hotels and transport are a bit easier to book.
Where to go in May — 4 picks
This month's recommended destinations are in the cards at the top of the screen. In short:
- 🏯 Gyeongbokgung — fresh greenery meets the palace. Hyangwonjeong and the rear garden at their greenest. Free admission in hanbok.
- 🌊 Dumulmeori (Yangpyeong) — peak season for dawn water mist. Arrive an hour before sunrise for the photo.
- 🎋 Juknokwon (Damyang) — new bamboo leaves emerging. Paths look their greenest.
- 🌱 Boseong green tea fields — the new-leaf harvest + peak verdancy. The greenest the fields get all year.
- 🎨 Busan Gamcheon Culture Village — warm light reaches deep into the mountainside village.
